About

OK, so what's this all about?
I have a 'thing' for old 20th Century adverts. The artwork, the products, the taglines, the blatant lies, I love it all. Looking at those advertisements offers a glimpse into a world I'll never know, a sort of 'faux nostalgia' for a time I was never a part of.

Ah, so it's just old adverts then?
No, not really. There's also gonna be stuff about old knitting/crochet patterns, magazine articles, beauty products, recipes...whatever I feel like.

Oh, so another 'retro/vintage' blog...
Hmmmm, not quite. A majority of it is going to be an image databank kinda thing, with a bit of YouTubery thrown in for good measure. Hopefully it'll be both interesting and funny.

Funny?
Yeah. Have you paid a visit to Lileks Institute of Official Cheer? What, what do you mean 'no'? Well, rectify that minor oversight right this very instance and go visit...don't worry, I'll wait.

See, it's funny, isn't it? That's the kinda vibe I want to get here...for the bits that are supposed to be funny.

Anyway, where do you get all this stuff?
Ahhhh, through unicorn power and wishful thinking. No? Oh, OK.
Well, luckily for me, in my day job I'm a librarian, which means I have access to hundreds of old magazines and archives. This also means I've amassed hundreds of scans of old adverts.

Seems legit. What's with the Rock 'n' Roll Martian thing?
Fans of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 should know the reference. If you aren't a MST3K fan, then it won't make any difference whether you know the reference or not, so there :P

See, Lileks AND MST3K influences....you just know this is gonna be a good blog.

I'll be the judge of that! So, are you the Rock 'n 'Roll Martian then?
No, don't talk daft.

This is me; Her Royal Highness, the Queen of Ice-Cream. Hello!
Urgh, shameless selfie.
Tell my friends I said "hands
off my shoes!"
Who are you, if you're not the Rock 'n' Roll Martian?
You may refer to me as Her Royal Highness, the Queen of Ice-Cream. Or Layla, whichever is easier. I answer to both.

And, yes, I like MLP.

And pinball. I like pinball. This t-shirt was clearly made for me.
